Third PlaceCHERISH THIS DAY By Cleo Bresett Jr. San Antonio, TX Occupation: Logline: A Marine returns home for his dad's funeral and remembers the lessons he learned about life, love, faith, and the everyday courage it takes to make a living. How did you come up with the idea for your screenplay? My idea came from fond childhood memories of working alongside my father as a common laborer. What or who was your inspiration? My parents. My father never finished the fifth grade in school, but he and my mother taught me to love God, family, and country. How long did it take you to write your script? I feel like I'm still polishing it. I always find a word or sentence I want to change. For me, it takes longer to outline a screenplay, than to write it. On average, it usually takes a year from start to finish. What were some of the challenges that you faced during the writing process? My biggest challenge was to dramatize a simple story about the faith and values of a family struggling to raise a son. What is your writing background? I have had two short stories published. To date, I have written 12 screenplays including Cherish This Day. Do you have formal training as a writer? No. I learned by reading The Screenwriter's Bible by David Trottier, watching numerous movies, reading various screenplays, and entering contests. Especially the ones that offer feedback. Do you have advice for other writers who are dealing with Christian themes? Yes. Don't turn your screenplay into a sermon. Write your story as you feel it and you'll find your theme. |
