Orphans of the Storm
By Gary Burlingame
Bellevue, Washington
Occupation: Wedding Videographer
Logline: Based on a true story, "Orphans of the Storm" is about a Benedictine monk who must leave his monastery and face overwhelming odds in order to protect a group of children in the Children's Crusade of 1212.

How did you come up with the idea for your screenplay?

I wanted to write a historical epic that dealt with a fresh topic, so I went to the bookstore and purchased a book called the People's Almanac. Inside were descriptions of many strange events that had occurred throughout history, and the one that grabbed me was an article about something called the Children's Crusade. This crusade took place during the Middle Ages and involved over 30,000 French children, who with blind determination had left their homes in hopes of freeing Jerusalem from the infidels. Stranger still, these children were led by a twelve-year-old shepherd boy named Stephen who claimed that God would open the sea for them as He did for Moses. I learned through further research that a Benedictine monk was the only person to return from the crusade (eighteen years later) to recount what had happened, so I decided to tell the whole story from his perspective (in flashback).

What or who was your inspiration?

My favorite film genre is the historical epic, especially those with a Christian world view, so I would say that films like "Ben Hur," "The Robe," and, most recently, "The Passion of the Christ" were my greatest inspiration. Although I also enjoy popcorn movies that provide pure escapist entertainment, the stories I remember most are those that affect me on a much deeper, spiritual level. After the enormous success of "Passion" I hope that film studios take notice and revive the biblical epic for good.

How long did it take for you to write your script?

I wrote the first draft (185 pages!) in about six months, then rewrote it numerous times to reduce the length and to improve the character development and conflict. The latest draft took about a month. With all of the events happening in the Middle East right now, I think the idea is more timely than ever.

What were some of the challenges that you faced during the writing process?

Since I was writing a screenplay based on a true historical event, I knew the research involved would be considerable. I also knew that putting a positive spin on such a tragic story would be very challenging, but thankfully the Lord showed me a way to make the story emotionally uplifting and redemptive. Since the crusade already involved religion, it was also relatively easy for me to incorporate the gospel message in a way that didn't seem forced or preachy.

What is your writing background? Do you have formal training as a writer?

I attended film school at USC which provided many outstanding courses in screenwriting. I have also read many screenwriting books and magazines.

Do you have advice for other writers who are dealing with Christian themes?

Don't get discouraged! The Christian world view may be unpopular in Hollywood but God is still in charge and Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" proved there is still a huge demand for this type of material. Pray that others will heed God's call to use this powerful medium for His glory and to ultimately draw others closer to Him.

"Only one life will soon be passed, only what's done for Christ, will last."
